The Bloomington Fire Department is a fully paid department, and has been since 1868. The department has grown over the years to 102 full-time firefighters. In addition to basic Firefighter II and Firefighter III certifications, department members maintain EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate or EMT-Paramedic certifications.

The department also has the Fire Chief, Deputy Chief of Operations, Deputy Chief of EMS, Deputy Chief of Training, 2 Assistant Training Officers, Public Information / Education Officer, 6 on-shift Fire Investigators - who are also full-time firefighters, and 1 Maintenance Coordinator along with 4 clerical support staff who are civilian employees.

The B.F.D. maintains 5 Stations that house Fire Engines, Aerial Fire Apparatus, Paramedic Ambulances, a Paramedic Chase Vehicle, Airport Crash Trucks, a Heavy Rescue, a HazMat Unit, and various Reserve Apparatus.
